Empowering the community with relevant skills and knowledge: SkillsFuture Festival @ South West 2024

South West CDC partners PropNex Realty and Singapore Post to bring industry-specific SkillsFuture workshops to about 13,000 employees.
The South West Community Development Council (CDC) in partnership with SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) organised the SkillsFuture Festival @ South West from 2 to 3 August 2024. Themed ‘Empowering the Future’, this year’s SkillsFuture Festival showcased technological innovations in the digital, green and care economies, providing residents a platform to explore opportunities in these growth sectors. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Mr Gan Kim Yong graced the event, together with Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Mayor of South West District Ms Low Yen Ling and Mr Zhulkarnain, Adviser to Chua Chu Kang GRC GROs (Keat Hong).
2 As part of the district’s efforts to build learning communities, the CDC will expand beyond providing SkillsFuture advisory to individuals to reach out to more corporates. The South West CDC will be partnering PropNex Realty and Singapore Post (SingPost) to reach out to about 13,000 staff employees to attend curated SkillsFuture workshops that cover areas relevant to their field of work such as Infocomm Technology, Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence and highlight how technology and innovation can enhance work productivity. The workshops provide targeted and industry-relevant training to equip the staff with the trends, insights and developments of the sectors, encouraging them to continuously upskill to stay relevant and adapt to the dynamic landscape. Through these workshops, the CDC aims to complement the efforts of the government in SkillsFuture Movement to cultivate an agile and resilient workforce.
3 "As the way we live and work changes with digitalisation, it is important that we continue to equip ourselves with skillsets to stay relevant. The partnership with PropNex and SingPost underscores our commitment to foster a culture of continuous learning and upskilling, empowering the community to adeptly respond to changing industry demands and remain agile. Through this year’s SkillsFuture Festival, we hope to encourage residents to boost their skills and knowledge to thrive in the evolving landscape of the workforce and be future-ready,” said Mayor Low.
4 SkillsFuture Festival @ South West 2024 brought together Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), corporations and training providers at a single platform to enable the participants to experience how digitalisation has changed the way we work. Some highlights of the festival include:
Lorry Crane Simulator technology to help develop and refine the skills of the learners in a controlled setting with real-life scenarios and risk-free training environment;
An autonomous electric vehicle developed by a group of IHL students to perform campus surveillance remotely without human intervention;
Microalgae and urban farming technology to offer healthy and sustainable food options; and
Electric Vehicle with its sustainable and eco-friendly features to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate environmental impact.

Training partner and what their displays are about.

1 | Academy of Design Arts and Media (ADAM) | Microalgae and City Farming | Microalgae is a superfood packed with nutrients that can benefit one’s body in countless ways. The booth will show how we are able to grow food-grade microalgae and transform it into a delicious and healthy beverage, such as algae bubble tea. As consumers become more interested in healthy and sustainable food options, algae bubble tea is becoming increasingly popular. ADAM is also the first CET to bring City Farming courses to Singapore, which will be featured at the booth. |
2 | Ngee Ann Polytechnic | UR3E robotic arm display | The UR3E is a 6-axis robot arm with good dexterity and human-arm like movement. The equipment consists of robot arms equipped with a 2-jaw gripper, conveyor belt and a depth camera. The equipment is used for NP’s CET and PET training purposes - for training on robot programming to perform automated pick and place operation of workpieces. The depth camera is used to detect the position of the cubes automatically while it travels through the conveyor belt. The robot is able to pick-up the cube and place them into pallets (based on the position observed by depth camera). Universal Robots (UR) were introduced into NP’s engineering curriculum to provide students with hands-on experience in advanced robotic systems and align with the shift towards Industry 4.0 technologies. This aims to equip students with advanced skills in robotics, automation, and mechatronics, preparing them for the increasing demand for such expertise of Robotics Engineer in the job market. |
3 | Performance Motors | Electric Car Technology | Performance Motors will be showcasing and sharing on their electric car technology as well as their regular sustainability outreach efforts to schools. |
4 | Singapore Polytechnic | Autonomous Electric Vehicle | The Autonomous Electric Vehicle (AEV) was developed by in-house internship students over 3 years since 2020. As the students have graduated, the project is now converted into a green electric vehicle using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies. Smart technologies developed with this project were extended to various projects, such as:

5 | SSA Group | Mini Planting Workshop | SSA Group’s "Mini Planting Workshop" is an engaging and hands-on activity which aims to promote urban farming and sustainable practices among participants. At the workshop, participants will be provided with small pots, soil, and a selection of herb seeds to plant their own mini herb garden. They can take their planted pots home as a reminder of their contribution to a greener environment. The workshop aims to:

6 | Wong Fong Academy | Lorry Crane Simulator | Developed by Austrian crane manufacturer Palfinger, the lorry crane simulator incorporates VR technology to provide a realistic surrounding for learners to take advantage of technological advancements to achieve intended learning outcomes. The simulator allows learners to operate and control a lorry crane with the same controls as an actual crane, without the need to go outdoors. This mitigates any risks or injuries that user might experience. |
