South West CDC and Hao Ren Hao Shi Enhance Mobile Groceries @ South West with $400,000 Worth of Groceries and Essential Items for Vulnerable Families

Mr Jeffrey Siow, Acting Minister for Transport, Senior Minister of State for Finance, and Adviser to Chua Chu Kang GRC GROs (Brickland-Tengah), together with Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and Mayor of South West District, will be launching the Enhanced Mobile Groceries @ South West on 5 July 2026. Mobile Groceries @ South West is a partnership between the South West Community Development Council (CDC) and Hao Ren Hao Shi that brings groceries and essential items to vulnerable families in the South West District, supporting them in coping with the rising cost of living. Over 60 volunteers from Siltronic Singapore Pte Ltd and Lianhua Primary School will also be on hand to assist with the distribution of items to beneficiaries at the event.

2        The enhanced initiative sees a total contribution of over $400,000 from South West CDC and Hao Ren Hao Shi. This goes towards raising grocery support from $40 to $55 per household, with over 8,500 residents able to select from a wider range of essential items, including adult diapers, Vitamin C, cough syrup and other healthcare-related products. These additions were introduced in response to feedback from residents, particularly seniors and caregivers who face higher household expenses and wellbeing concerns.

3        As part of the enhancements, residents will benefit from basic health screenings through a new partnership with the NUHS. Supported by over 120 NUHS staff volunteers and nurses over two years, the screenings will include height and weight measurements, blood pressure checks and nurse counselling. Residents identified with potential health concerns will be referred to community health posts and healthcare professionals for follow-up where necessary, ensuring continuity of care beyond the distribution sessions. This marks the first time healthcare services have been integrated into the programme, enabling residents to access basic health assessments alongside grocery and essentials support, bringing preventive healthcare and timely intervention closer to the community.

4        Beyond tangible support, Mobile Groceries @ South West has grown into a platform for community participation, bringing together residents, schools, corporates, and community partners. Over the past two years, Hao Ren Hao Shi has been instrumental in mobilising a dedicated pool of volunteers to support distribution sessions on the ground. For many students, the experience offers meaningful opportunities to interact directly with residents, gain a deeper understanding of community needs, and contribute to community service. As the programme enters its next chapter, South West CDC and Hao Ren Hao Shi remain committed to bringing more schools, corporates, and community groups on board to strengthen support networks for vulnerable families across the South West District. In total, over 3,000 volunteers are expected to be involved in the initiative.

5        " We’re launching the Enhanced Mobile Groceries initiative to provide more help and support for our residents and to improve their well-being. The value of each grocery pack per household is now increased by more than 35%, up from $40 to $55. In addition, we are introducing health screenings and educational resources alongside our grocery distribution for the very first time. This dual-pronged boost aims to lighten the daily living expenses of households while also caring for our residents in super-ageing Singapore. To provide this expanded assistance, we mobilised the resources, funds, expertise, time and efforts of community partners, volunteers and grassroots leaders. This ground-up collaboration reflects, in many ways, a “we-first” Singapore spirit shaping up in the South West district," said Mayor Low.

We work with schools to encourage students of all ages to volunteer in the communities where their schools are located, and these volunteering assignments serve as learning platforms that enable them to be grounded in real issues, gain invaluable teamwork skills, and be authentically connected to their communities. As we enhance Mobile Groceries @ South West together with South West CDC, we are proud to deepen our commitment, not just through increased funding, but by growing a pipeline of student and corporate volunteers who are inspired to give back, fulfilling our motto of 'Let's Do Good Together!'.”

7        "We are committed to making preventive care part of everyday life for residents. Through Mobile Groceries @ South West, our partnership with South West CDC and Hao Ren Hao Shi allows us to bring basic health screenings right to residents’ doorsteps, where early detection can make all the difference. Our community nurses also take the time to speak with residents during these sessions, helping them adopt healthier lifestyles, while guiding those with health concerns towards community health posts and other follow-up care,” said Dr Andre Cheah, Chief, Population Health and Community Care, NUHS.

8        For Mdm Tay Yin, a resident who has benefitted from Mobile Groceries @ South West, the enhancements are a welcome addition, particularly the inclusion of free basic health screenings. "The groceries and household items have helped to ease some of our household expenses and I am glad that the programme has expanded its range of items to better meet our needs. It is also very helpful that basic health screenings will now be part of the programme, as it makes it more convenient for seniors like us to monitor our health and seek help early if needed," she said.

9        Over the next two years, the enhanced programme will continue to support over 8,500 vulnerable households through 72 distribution sessions across the South West District.
